So I have been a little quiet in the kanzashi scene because of the regency event but now I have some free time I thought I would get back on the kanzashi making.
Kusudama is one of my favourite kanzashi to make. They are just adorable to look at.
These ones are a little different to the ones I use to make in that they are brooches as well.
And since it is Autumn / Fall, I thought it would be nice to make them in the colours of the seasons.
The grey one is particular apt for me since I am going to be seeing grey skies for a long time.
But then again, seeing the golden leaves in the Botanical Garden is quite nice.
And purple because I love purple.

Adventures in felt kanzashi - part 7
My felt kanzashi adventures has been a lot of fun but I have to say this one has to be my favourite so far.
The iris kanzashi!
I posted it a while back but here are some nicer pictures.
Love how the felt leaves curl.
And those little yellow highlights are just perfect.

Colourful Kanzashi Combinations!
So apart from creating kimono kanzashi hairclips, I have been experimenting with colour!
Why?
Because I always wanted to play around with colours and now I had a little bit of time to indulge in my fantasy.
So the first one I tried is grey and fuchsia.
This one came about because of this kanzashi
https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/171926770/grey-and-fuschia-kimono-kanzashi?ref=shop_home_active
and I thought if a kimono silk has this colour combination then what would it look like if it was supersized?
Then I thought I would try something a bit more retro in combination and went for brown and yellow. I often see plaid fabric with this colourway and even my a-Line lolita high waist skirt you see below,
has a similar colouring although not as strong.

Corsage brainstorming - part 2
So yesterday I made my first official corsage and today I thought I would combine a bit of musubi technique into the making.
There is a way of gathering the obi to make a round petal so I applied the same technique on a piece of organza and then applied a couple of white roses.
Okay this picture does not do the corsage any justice at all!
That is much better.
Of course I could sew on pearls, add stamens, use different colours and generally bling it up!
Maybe I should......

They may not exist naturally in nature but that is the wonder of the tsumami kanzashi technique. You can bring to life black roses without a second thought and here they are! This design came about because of my black lolita dress that I have made which is sitting on my Miffy (the mannequin) as we speak.
I was wondering what sort of hair accessory would be perfect for this dress and after a lot of thought, my mind always went back to roses! But not just ordinary red roses but black ones.
So this would be perfect for a kuro, gothic or old school lolita who wants to add a touch of floral into their outfit or maybe a bride who wants to be different. In fact you could just wear it as a floral accessory for everyday wear if you like!

Hana Kanzashi translated are flower (hana) hair accessories (kanzashi). All of mine are made using the Tsumami technique which involves pinching squares of fabric into individual petals and then arranging them into wonderful flowers. The only limit to tsumami kanzashi is the imagination of the crafter.
I accept custom orders for all sort of accessories (like fascinators, hairbands, brooches, etc), please convo me for requests.

Crane kanzashi part two.
Buoyant with my success at the tiny crane kanzashi.
I thought it was time to super-sized the crane!
Which means it will be bigger and use a load more petals.
Over the years I have collected a lot of pictures of crane kanzashi so I have a good idea of the number of petals I have to use and the size of them so here is the first one!
I started off making a medium sized one which fits nicely in my hand. Even though it is small in it size it still uses 34 petals in total.
Then of course it was time to make it even bigger. Something that will really standout and here it is. 52 petals in total and it looks like the parent of the one above.
Here is a photo for you to compare the sizes. They still need to be mounted onto hairpins and a little bit of colour still needs to be added but they are done! Lets see if I can tweak the design again so that the crane's wings are more wider and not so curved up.

Crane Kanzashi
I see crane kanzashi very often and I have always wanted to make one so I decided to make a mini one first before I make a big one!
I have to say for a first attempt it isn't too bad!
The actual kanzashi itself is only 10cm tall but it took a whole morning to make. It is a little bit cold here in Belfast and the glue was refusing to dry properly. Lucky music was in the background so time didn't go too slowly.
It is very sweet but I am bias.
Now I am going to ask you the audience a question and please be honest. How much would you pay for this?
Here are some things to consider, this one took 4 hours to make but I can probably refine the method to 2-3 hours. It very delicate work and all the wire has been hand wound with thread.

Kanzashi experiment continue!!!
So I have taken a break from making new flowers and came back to my old favourite KUSUDAMA!!!
I do love kusudama as they are little balls of cuteness and it took me ages to perfect them.
However I have only once made one from cotton fabric so I thought I should make some more. Therefore off I want to my fabric shop, brought some quilting fabric (and a bit more for kimono project) and here are there results.
The fabric I use is a beige/cream fabric with little pink/red roses all over it and it has created a kusudama with a country chic feel to it, don't you think? It is always interesting to see what sort of kanzashi one can create when they use non-silk fabric.

What does a kanzashi maker do on a rainy day? - Part 2
So earlier I told you that the top two flowers were my attempts to create a white lilac flower.
What about the other two?
The next one I decided to have a try to recreate is the primrose.
I think you can guess why I wanted to create. Don't the heart shape petals look cute? Now I could create this flower using the same method as making cherry blossoms but I felt it deserved a new way.
Therefore using the round petal as a base, I decided that adding additional pleats in the centre would give the petal a flatter look. Then of course the only thing left to do is add the little pinch at the centre to create the heart shape. Unfortunately some of the pinches didn't last very long as I used un-starch fabric but you get the idea.
As always comments and criticisms are welcome.
