Kusudama madness

Lately I have been making half kusudama i.e these ones!

which is available for purchase in my etsy store here.

However it has been ages since I made a full one.  I have to admit there are only two examples in my personal collection which are .......

which were both made a long time ago so it is about time I made another one.

So should I make another one which is similar in size as the two above or shall I try something more challenging.  Challenging in this case is making a itsy bity one.  

YES you guess I decided to make a tiny one which is only a bit bigger then a two penny piece.  Obviously I had to use smaller petals and in this case I had to use 1/2 inch squares!  I swear my eyes are going crossed eyed from staring at the petals but I persevered and the end result is this little darling!

I am not joking it is tiny compared to the other complicated kanzashi I make.

I think I will turn it into a phone charm / obi kazari but now I am going to stare into the distance to get my eyesight back @_@

Kanzashi experiment continue!!!

So I have taken a break from making new flowers and came back to my old favourite KUSUDAMA!!!

I do love kusudama as they are little balls of cuteness and it took me ages to perfect them.

However I have only once made one from cotton fabric so I thought I should make some more.  Therefore off I want to my fabric shop, brought some quilting fabric (and a bit more for kimono project) and here are there results.

The fabric I use is a beige/cream fabric with little pink/red roses all over it and it has created a kusudama with a country chic feel to it, don't you think?  It is always interesting to see what sort of kanzashi one can create when they use non-silk fabric.

I love kanzashi - USA kusudama

I really do love making kanzashi so I am going to show one off every other day.

Here is the first one which I based on the USA flag.

USA kusudama

I was inspired to make this because of my lovely American friend!  I also make a Union Jack one as well for her but that is another post.

Even though the design turned out just like I imagine, I was still amazed how it looks.  Even with spiralling nature of the design, you can still see the USA flag design perfectly well and the shiny diamanté provide the perfect stars on the flag.


I did actually think about putting on 50 stars but then it dawned on me that this would be impossible so I just put enough on to give the impression of the stars on the flag.

A quick update on my life!

Ok update time!

I have been applying for stalls at Christmas Markets and although I failed to get one with Candy Craft Market at the Millennium Gallery, I succeed in getting one at the Crucible which is great! This will be held on the 27 November 2010 so if you are around then why not visit!

I'm still not sure how I should finish off the kusudama.

Should I make it in the traditional way or use it to make a modern kanzashi?

Oh and finally Lyuba and I have been arranging the first and second Kimono de Jack UK event which is very exciting. Lyuba has been a very busy bee getting a twitter and blogger account for Kimono de Jack UK and I just created the Facebook group so that we have a place to share all the photos and announce events for members.

The first one will be held on 23 October at Trafalgar Square in London and there is not plans on what we are going to do. We will probably enjoy the sights and sounds of London, take lots of photos and exchange kitsuke ideas.

The second one is on 13 November at Stables Market in Camden where we will be visit a new Tea Bar (YUMMY). Obviously we will be eating, drinking and shopping at Camden Market so if you are going to turn up in kimono make sure your kitsuke is robust!

The extent we are willing to go just to wear kimono is extreme!
